Some vehicles are simply more than cars. They are pieces of automotive history.
At Prestige PPF, we recently had the privilege of protecting an exceptionally rare 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 W100, applying paint protection film across the vehicle to help preserve its original condition for years to come.
As one of Mercedes-Benz’s most prestigious and technically advanced cars of its era, the W100 600 represents an important chapter in automotive history. Today, beautifully preserved examples are highly sought after by collectors, making the protection of both its paintwork and intricate exterior detailing particularly important.
Protecting a Piece of Automotive History
Unlike a modern vehicle, working on a classic such as the Mercedes-Benz 600 requires an entirely different approach.
The objective isn’t simply to make the car look its best today. It’s about preserving what makes the vehicle special in the first place.
Original paintwork on a vehicle of this age can carry enormous historical and financial value. Minor stone chips, road debris, environmental contamination and everyday wear can permanently alter the appearance of an irreplaceable vehicle.
For this particular W100, our goal was to provide a modern level of protection while retaining the appearance and character of the original vehicle.
Full Body PPF Protection
We applied paint protection film across the vehicle to create an invisible protective barrier between the original finish and the outside environment.
PPF can help protect vulnerable surfaces from:
- Stone chips and road debris
- Light scratches and scuffs
- Road contamination
- Insect deposits
- Bird droppings and other contaminants
- General environmental wear
- Repeated washing and maintenance
For a collector vehicle, this additional layer of protection can be particularly valuable. Rather than allowing damage to reach the original finish, the film takes the impact and can subsequently be replaced when required.
The result is protection that remains virtually invisible, allowing the character of the original Mercedes-Benz to remain intact.
Protecting More Than Just the Paint
One of the defining features of this particular W100 is its extensive use of chrome and brightwork.
The exterior of the Mercedes-Benz 600 features substantial chrome detailing, including its distinctive bumpers, trims and other brightwork. These components are just as important to the overall appearance of the vehicle as the paint itself.
For this reason, our approach extended beyond simply protecting the painted panels.
The chrome trims across the vehicle were also protected with PPF.
This provides an additional barrier against the small abrasions, contamination and environmental exposure that can gradually affect highly finished exterior trim.
On a modern vehicle, replacing a damaged piece of exterior trim may be relatively straightforward. On a 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600, however, maintaining original components can be considerably more important.
Preserving the existing chrome therefore becomes part of preserving the vehicle itself.
Preserving the Future
Classic and antique vehicles become increasingly difficult to replace as time passes.
Every original panel, piece of chrome and carefully preserved detail contributes to the history and authenticity of the vehicle.
For collectors and owners of significant automobiles, protecting that originality can be just as important as maintaining mechanical condition.
At Prestige PPF, we believe paint protection isn’t exclusively for new supercars.
A piece of automotive history, protected for the future.
