Do I need to Report PPF to DVLA

New UK driving laws that came in to effect in Summer 2024 require car owners to report vehicle modifications to the DVLA or risk being banned!

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Section 75), all vehicles must comply with specific standards to be legally driven in the UK. According to the law, it’s illegal to alter a vehicle beyond its intended manufactured purpose. Anyone found guilty of such modifications without reporting it to the DVLA could face penalties under this Act. These penalties can include a driving ban or up to a £5000 fine and nine points on your drivers license.

Modifications that can land you in trouble include exhaust modifications, number plate changes, body kits or other body/chassis changes such as headlamps, suspensions to changing the colour with a vehicle wrap, but does not clarify if this applies to vehicle livery also. In some circumstances there are exemptions such as if the vehicle was modified to accommodate a disabled person.

PPF is Exempt from the New Law

We are glad to inform our customers that Paint Protection Film is not affected by the new legislation.

PPF Film is invisible and does not alter the look or colour of your vehicle hence falls under permitted modifications, even if changing from gloss to satin or matte, as long as the colour stays the same you will not be required to report the change to DVLA.
